Tip #10: Virtual Desktop Support For Mac OS X
Tuesday, October 9th, 2007I’ve been spending a long time with Linux before I made the switch to Mac. I still do, but to a lesser extent nowadays since I spend most of my computing time with my MacBook. One thing I miss with the Linux GUIs available is their support for multiple desktops. You see, this makes me segregate my open windows into several groups. I can have one desktop where all development applications are open. I can have another where all windows related to software testing are placed. I can have yet another one for all browser and mail windows. The list goes on. The Beryl and Compiz add-ins to X.org even have an animated effect while you switch desktops.
During one of my geek nights (one evening during the weekend where I do nothing but tinker with my computer) I’ve discovered that somebody made a way to place multiple desktop support to Mac OS X. It’s been named simply Desktop Manager. It does as it is named, to create multiple virtual desktops and manage switching from one desktop to another. Just like Compiz and Beryl, a choice is presented as to what effect is shown when desktops are being switched.
I’ve been using it since last night, and so far I haven’t had any problems with it. I personally like the Flip effect when switching desktops.
Download Desktop Manager from MacUpdate.
