This is one for Mac OS X newbies like me.
I’m quite amused when I see screenshots of Mac OS X desktops showing the Macintosh HD with an icon different from its default, which is a picture of a hard disk.

I keep on getting tips to use icon management applications, like the freeware LiteIcon. However, I’m more interested on how to do it manually, since I won’t be changing a lot of the icons anyway, just that of the Macintosh HD. It turns out to be quite a simple process.
First, a source image is needed. Open an image file through Preview and select the desired region of that image that will be used to replace the default icon.

Use Apple Key + C to copy the selection, and then close the Preview window.
Select the Macintosh HD icon and press Apple Key + I. This opens up the File Info dialog box.

Select the current icon image (the one in the upper left), and use Apple Key + V to paste the previously selected image.

The previously selected image should now change the default icon image.
When you close the File Info dialog box, the new icon should appear.
